Shopify’s latest data on the rising global impact of entrepreneurship

The most important economic force right now is the entrepreneur.

Leaps in technology are leading to more people around the world building businesses than at any point in history. And when more people build, everyone benefits.

We see this in real time. Millions of entrepreneurs use Shopify to sell billions of products. This gives us trillions of datapoints on commerce: a global snapshot of the current state of entrepreneurship.

Here’s the story our data tells over the last year.

Entrepreneurs create outsized economic impact

More business owners mean a bigger economy for everyone.

Entrepreneurs create jobs, buy from suppliers, invest in their communities, and generate net new economic value for the world. This value isn’t concentrated in one place or on one balance sheet. It’s dispersed into the hands of many, spread across nearly every country on the planet, impacting communities of every size and culture.

In the last year, entrepreneurs on Shopify generated:

  • $1.2+ trillion in global economic activity

That’s larger than the annual GDP of most countries.

    +110% from 2022

Economic activity in billions: USA 687.6B, Australia 69.9B, Germany 49.3B, Canada 42.7B, Japan 20.7B, France 24.6B, Spain 13.1B, Italy 12.9B, UK 94.3B, and Rest of the world 221.1B

  • 9.6+ million jobs

    supported by Shopify-powered businesses

    +193% from 2022

  • $68+ billion

    in cross-border sales

“I drive by houses our employees bought while working for us. I don’t know why, but it makes me cry. I don’t think about how I’ve helped them. I think about how they make the wheels turn on our business.”

AI is changing the odds for entrepreneurs

AI tools help entrepreneurs build. Agentic commerce opens new paths to customers.

AI has expanded what one entrepreneur can accomplish. Its potential goes beyond productivity: it’s changing how customers discover products. Buyers can chat with AI to describe what they want, getting product recommendations based on merit and relevance, not just a brand’s popularity or ad spend. That shift, which we call agentic commerce, improves discovery and puts a more diverse range of products in front of more buyers. And those motivated, post-research buyers are more likely to purchase.

AI channels lead to higher conversion rates

  • AI-referred sessions convert 80% better than organic search.

  • AI-referred order values are 14% larger.

  • AI drives nearly 2× as many first-time customers as other channels.

“Our customers have never searched the way search engines wanted them to. Nobody with eczema types ‘hypoallergenic bra.’ They type ‘my bra makes my skin burn,’ or ‘latex free bra for eczema.’ Agentic storefronts closed that gap. It’s the first search interface that speaks our customers’ language.”
Nikhiel GenomalCottonique

The barriers are collapsing

Advances in technology are making entrepreneurship more accessible.

For most of history, starting a business took specialized skills, a lot of time, and significant upfront investment. If you didn’t have the right connections, education, and location, you started with a disadvantage. Technology is dismantling all of those obstacles.

You don’t need experience to start

With AI and the latest tech, everyone has a Swiss Army knife of tools they didn’t have before. Merchants installed 21 million apps in 2025 (up 19.5% from 2024) giving them more ways to fill skill gaps and support their business needs. You don’t need a business degree, or all the answers to start.
  • 86% of surveyed business leaders say ecommerce platforms have made it easier to start a business than a decade ago.

  • 8% more stores reach 5 orders in just 15 days when using onboarding support from Sidekick, Shopify’s AI-powered assistant.

Hannah Perry of Floof Cotton Candy standing behind a rainbow cake.
“I had zero experience building a business, nothing. EIN number, what is that? Google, YouTube, taxes, that just overwhelmed me. So I went to Shopify. And I immediately knew, this is going to be good.”
Hannah PerryFloof Cotton Candy

You can turn an idea into a sale faster

Because of technology, commerce now moves as fast as culture. When the new pope was announced in 2025, it took less than an hour for t-shirts bearing Pope Leo’s name to surface on the internet.
  • Half of new sellers reach their first sale within about three weeks.

  • 43% more stores make their first sale within a single day of signing up, compared to 2022.

  • Every 26 seconds, a store on Shopify makes its first sale.

“I truly started with just a few pairs of earrings and they sold right away. I had a backlog of orders immediately and it just kind of snowballed from there.”

You need less money up front

Building a good website used to have significant upfront costs. Now you can build your own site in an afternoon with good software and AI tools, and accomplish what used to take a team of many.
  • 78% of surveyed merchants built their own Shopify store.

  • 41% of stores launch with a single product.

“Trying to grow a company without taking an investment has been really important to us. Using AI cut down on hiring tons of consultants or adding tons of people to the team.”
Alexandra GoldDough Dissolve

You can sell to anyone from anywhere

There’s an economic principle called the gravity model: like gravity, the pull of a business should weaken with distance. But as the world becomes more connected, entrepreneurship brings remote communities into the global world of commerce. Now an order from a rural entrepreneur travels 1,799 km on average—about the same as an urban one at 1,870 km.
  • Last year, businesses on Shopify shipped to 1 billion distinct addresses.

  • Rural cross-border sales grew 4.4x in 6 years.

Your specialty product is easier to find

The majority of sales on Shopify now come from products outside of the top 100 most common categories. With AI matching people to the specific things they’re looking for, “niche” no longer means “limited.” Entrepreneurs can reach customers anywhere, no matter how specialized their products are.
  • Nearly 54% of new stores sell products outside the top 100 categories.

  • 75% of sales from AI-referred orders came from stores selling specialized products.

The 9-to-5 has competition

More people are choosing to build a business and a future of their own.

The market is getting bigger; ecommerce continues to capture more of total retail spending, and Shopify’s share has grown with it (now powering more than 14% of U.S. ecommerce). As the market expands and technology improves, more people are trying entrepreneurship.

This increase is visible globally. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that business applications have reached historic highs, and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor reports increasing levels of entrepreneurial activity across many economies.

The entrepreneurial shift is well underway

  • Since 2018, the number of first-time sellers on Shopify has increased 7x.

Bar chart showing growth in first-time sellers from 2018 to 2025, ending at 7.0 times the 2018 level.

  • 1.2 million stores made their first sale on Shopify in 2025—that’s one every 26 seconds.

  • Businesses on Shopify sell more than $1 billion every day.

People choose entrepreneurship at every age, across all geographies and backgrounds. Here’s a look at who’s building on Shopify.

  • Age:

  • Location:

  • Gender:

“We are not really the retirement types... pretty much everyone said, ‘are you guys crazy? Why do you want to take on that kind of risk at this stage of your life?’ I want to keep learning and keep challenging myself until I draw my last breath.”
Carolyn HurstWestcott Vineyards

The opportunity is expanding

More people can build—and more people benefit when they do.

The human desire to build is universal, and it’s never been easier to act on it. As traditional career paths become less certain, entrepreneurship becomes the getaway car: a practical alternative to the nine-to-five and, some would argue, the better bet.

186 million people bought from a Shopify store for the first time in 2025.

  • That’s 6 new sales per second!

  • For every $1 Shopify makes in revenue, our ecosystem makes $36.

  • Since launch, businesses on Shopify have shipped 4.4 billion products nearly 1.1 trillion miles total.

Every new business sets many more in motion

An entire economy has grown around supporting these entrepreneurs. The people who build apps for the Shopify App Store, themes for the Shopify Theme Store, and agencies that support businesses on Shopify—we call them Shopify Partners. As our number of merchants grows, so does the demand for experts to help them. The opportunity within Shopify’s ecosystem keeps expanding, and more entrepreneurs are being created here too.

This past year, ecosystem partners generated:

  • $194.7 billion

    in global economic activity

  • $3.8 billion

    in Shopify Partner payouts

If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a business, you should

In every country surveyed, Shopify merchants said owning or operating a business feels more financially secure than a traditional job.

Regardless of how the world changes, it will always need entrepreneurs. Nothing can take away human agency and the ability to build new things, and more voices will always be better than fewer when it comes to commerce.

  • 57% of entrepreneurs who waited before launching say they wish they’d started sooner.

  • 95% of entrepreneurs say building their company is one of their proudest accomplishments.

FAQs

About the research

What is the Entrepreneur Effect?

The Entrepreneur Effect is the economic and societal impact created when more people start and grow businesses. Entrepreneurs support jobs, generate economic activity, expand consumer choice, and help money circulate through local communities. This counters the “fixed pie fallacy”—the idea that economic opportunity is fixed—because entrepreneurs create new products, demand, and jobs rather than simply redistributing existing value. In the last year, Shopify-powered businesses supported more than 9.6 million jobs and generated more than $1.2 trillion in global economic activity.

How was the data conducted?

This research combines aggregated Shopify platform data, third-party and merchant surveys, and economic-impact modelling. Different findings use different sources and methods. Estimates of jobs supported and economic activity use an input-output framework informed by Shopify merchant and partner activity and OECD global supply-chain data. Survey findings identify the survey provider, sample, markets, and fieldwork dates where applicable. Entrepreneurship findings

Is entrepreneurship growing or declining?

Entrepreneurship has grown substantially on Shopify, while several external indicators also show elevated business formation in many markets. In 2025, seven times as many Shopify stores made their first sale as in 2018. Business formation in the United States and startup activity in many regions have also reached record levels. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, business applications in the United States have reached historically high levels, while the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor reports high levels of entrepreneurial activity across many economies.

How many jobs do small businesses create?

Small businesses are major job creators, but global totals vary by definition and source. In the last year, Shopify’s merchant and partner ecosystem supported more than 9.6 million jobs. That ecosystem includes Shopify-powered businesses and the app developers, theme designers, agencies, and other experts that help them operate and grow. “Jobs supported” captures employment associated with the ecosystem’s direct, indirect, and induced economic activity.

What is the average age of an entrepreneur?

The average age of an entrepreneur is about 42, based on responses to Shopify’s 2026 Merchant Pulse Survey. The largest age group was 35–44, representing 31% of respondents, followed by those aged 45–54 at 24% and 25–34 at 23%.

How long does it take to make your first sale?

The timing varies by product, market, and launch strategy, but among newly created Shopify stores that ultimately achieved a sale, half received their first order within approximately three weeks of launching their online store. Compared with 2022, 43% more stores now make their first sale within one day of signing up.

Do you still need experience or a lot of money to have a business?

Experience and capital remain useful—and some businesses require significant upfront investment—but ecommerce and AI tools reduce the skills, staffing, and costs needed to test most business ideas. Ecommerce platforms like Shopify, AI tools, and apps can help founders close skill gaps and do work that once required a larger team or budget. In a 2026 U.S. survey, 86% of surveyed business leaders say ecommerce platforms have made it easier to start a business than a decade ago. Among surveyed merchants, 78% built their own store, while 41% of stores launch with just one product. In other words, founders can test an idea and begin selling before they have a large team, a broad product catalog, or every skill in-house.

Why start a business now?

Starting a business is faster and more accessible than it was a decade ago. Ecommerce lets entrepreneurs sell beyond their local market, while AI and technology continue to reduce common barriers involving skills, time, cost, and product discovery. Among surveyed merchants who delayed launching, 57% said they wished they had started sooner.

AI and commerce

How is AI helping entrepreneurs compete?

AI helps entrepreneurs reduce the time, skills, and money needed to start and operate a business. Entrepreneurs can use AI for market research, writing product descriptions, creating marketing campaigns, analyzing performance data, supporting customers, among many other tasks. This helps small teams move faster and accomplish work that previously required several specialists. Across Shopify stores, AI-driven traffic increased threefold year over year. During the measured period, AI-referred sessions had an 80% higher conversion rate than organic-search sessions, while AI-referred orders had a 14% higher average order value. AI channels also help entrepreneurs compete through agentic discovery. Shopping agents recommend products based on their relevance to a shopper’s query, making it easier for small businesses to reach potential target customers at moments of high intent, without relying solely on advertising budgets.

How much traffic do AI assistants send to online stores?

Traffic from AI assistants is growing quickly, although the amount varies by store, category, market, and measurement period. Across Shopify stores, AI-driven traffic increased threefold year over year. Merchants should track AI referrals alongside search, social, email, and paid channels to understand their own results.

Does AI search favor big brands or small businesses?

AI referrals are helping shoppers discover products outside Shopify’s most common categories. In the measured period, 75% of AI-referred sales came from stores selling products outside the top 100 product categories.

How do AI-referred visits and orders perform compared with other channels?

During the measured period, AI-referred sessions had an 80% higher conversion rate than organic-search sessions, while AI-referred orders had a 14% higher average order value. AI channels also converted nearly twice as many orders from first-time customers as other channels.

How does Sidekick help new Shopify merchants?

Sidekick is Shopify’s AI-powered commerce assistant. It helps merchants complete tasks, navigate Shopify, make informed decisions, and receive personalized guidance. Onboarding support from Sidekick increased the share of new stores reaching five orders within 15 days by 8%.
